Ghanaian Silk Thread Art

These pieces are created entirely by hand.  After cutting the backboard, the design is pencilled thereon.  Transparent glue is then applied to a small area of the board and brightly coloured silk threads are laid down one by one, partly by skilful hand placement, and partly by use of small metal Y-shaped crooks to push the threads parallel to each other.  The piece is slowly built up in this manner, gluing each new small area and adding thread...very time consuming!  The end result is an interesting new style of “painting” with an almost three dimensional texture.

All of our Ghanaian Silk Thread Art pieces are available for purchase directly online.
